Boyler Room : Brian Voelker - Drexel University

“We Teach What We Do” serves as one of the core tenets at Trilogy Lacrosse.  We practice what we preach – educating the next generation of players while also competing on the biggest stages in the sport.

While not on the Trilogy staff, Brian Voelker lives by this same motto.  He rose to the occasion when it mattered most earning Defenseman of the World honors on a Gold Medal winning Team USA.  Now he brings that same fire to the coaching world where he has made a positive impact at every stop.

Personally, I witnessed Brian’s career from afar, a younger Greyhound admiring the plaques in the athletic center that he accumulated over his illustrious career.  Then I got a chance to see him firsthand when he brought the Penn program back to notoriety.

He has assembled a first-class staff at Drexel, including Conor Ford and Chris Collins, both of whom I consider personal friends.  They are two solid people that any player would be fortunate to have as a coach and mentor for their collegiate career.

Expect big things from the Dragons.  Things usually start from the top-down and with Brian at the helm, I see them making waves at the national level.

1. Drexel Academic Window: 3.0GPA and 1,000 SAT Score (Math + Verbal)
2. Drexel Timeline: quicker than he would like.  Start looking at Sophomores but understands that they need time to develop.  Looks for decisions in Fall of Junior year.
3. Drexel Approach: try not to overthink things.  Looks for production and how they can blend all players together.  Try to bring in “best available” and then fit together but do have specific needs (i.e. Left-handed attack, on-ball and off-ball Defensemen, etc.).
4. Rosters: size increasing to 50-60 spots so more opportunities than previously.
5. Multi-sport Athletes: want to see but also need to attend Fall/Off-season events.  Understand that this puts player in tough position – communicate to a program if you have another game (football, soccer, etc.) so they know performance might be affected.
6. Communication: stay in touch and use email with highlight clip as initial reach-out.
7. Drexel Co-op Program: Special five-year program with Internships built in.  Feel this provides more opportunities with networking and professional skill development.
